Embossing & Debossing Process for Custom Packaging

Embossing and debossing are premium packaging finishing process that creates a raised 3D effect on selected areas of the packaging surface, such as a logo, brand name, pattern, or decorative detail. By pressing the material between custom-made dies, the design is lifted above the surface, giving the packaging a more tactile, elegant, and high-end appearance.

Embossing and debossing are similar processes, but they create opposite effects.

Embossing raises the design above the surface, creating a lifted 3D effect.
Debossing presses the design into the surface, creating an indented effect.

Both techniques can make packaging look premium, but embossing is often chosen when a brand wants the logo to stand out more prominently.

Common types of embossing

  • Registered embossing aligns the raised effect with printed graphics, foil stamping, or spot UV coating. This creates a more detailed and decorative result.
  • Combination embossing combines embossing with foil stamping in one process, creating a raised metallic logo effect. This is commonly used for luxury brand packaging.
